What are cookies?
Cookies are like little notes websites leave on your computer. These notes help websites remember things about you, like your preferences, login status, or browsing behavior. While some cookies are helpful, many are used for tracking and advertising. They are a web-browser feature, so what they mean differs between our website and our apps.
By surface
Cookies live in the browser, so the story is different on the web than in the apps. Choose a surface:
No cookies
This website sets no cookies, ours or anyone else’s. Older blog posts that used to embed YouTube videos now link to YouTube instead, so YouTube only sees you if you choose to go there.
What is stored on your device
Only two preferences, and only if you change them: your theme (light, dark, or system) and your text size. They are saved in your browser’s local storage so the site looks the way you left it. They stay in your browser and are never sent to us. Clearing your site data removes them.
Website analytics
We use Fathom Analytics to count visits. Fathom sets no cookies and builds no profile of you. When a page loads, Fathom receives the page address and the site you came from, along with the IP address and browser details that every web request carries. Fathom combines those into a visitor signature using a salt that changes every day, so a visit today can’t be linked to a visit tomorrow or to other websites. Fathom says it doesn’t store the IP address with the visit.
We also count which of our links and buttons get used, such as the App Store button or the blog filters. When you search the blog, we record only whether the search found anything, not what you typed. We never send names, email addresses, or account details to Fathom.
Turning analytics off
Our website loads the Fathom script regardless of Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track settings. A content blocker that blocks Fathom can prevent analytics requests. The site works without analytics.
The apps don’t use cookies
Cookies are a web-browser mechanism, so they don’t apply to the native Cleft apps on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. There is nothing cookie-shaped tracking you inside the apps.
In-app analytics
TelemetryDeck: we use TelemetryDeck for anonymous in-app analytics to understand how people use Cleft. TelemetryDeck doesn’t use cookies; it uses anonymous, non-reversible identifiers and collects no personal information. It aligns with our privacy-first approach: no cookies, no personal data collection.
If we change our mind
If we ever decide to use cookies in the future, we’ll:
- Tell you here and explain why
- Update this policy with clear information
- Give you control over cookie preferences
- Maintain our commitment to your privacy
Current status: no changes planned. Our no-cookie approach aligns with our privacy-first values.
